By Special to the Sun | August 10, 2007

An American soldier from Washington Heights was killed in an explosion 60 kilometers northeast of Baghdad on Monday.

Corporal Juan Alcantara, 22, was employed to Iraq in June 2006 with the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Wash., with about 3,800 soldiers. Alcantara's sister, Fredelinda Pena, 25, said her brother was among a small team of troops performing security checks when a bomb went off in one of the houses he entered.
