Window Washer Dies in Scaffolding Collapse, Officials Say
A window washer was killed and another is in critical condition after their scaffolding plummeted to the ground from an Upper East Side high-rise apartment building this morning, officials said.
The two victims, brothers from Ecuador living in Linden, New Jersey, fell from the 43rd floor of 227 East 66th St. at about 10:20 a.m., officials said. The deceased was identified by police as Edgar Moreno, 30.
Investigators believe the scaffolding tumbled as the two victims were setting it up to begin cleaning the building's windows, police sources said.
Neither man was wearing a safety harness, a first deputy commissioner for the New York City Department of Buildings, Robert LiMandri, told reporters at the scene.
The victims worked for a cleaning company called City Wide, police sources said.
The surviving victim, 37, who was not identified, was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, police said.
