A U.S. Open official says Maria Sharapova's shoulder injury will force her to miss the year's last Grand Slam tournament.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Sharapova had yet to publicly announce her withdrawal today.

Sharapova announced yesterday on her Web site that she will have to miss the Beijing Olympics because of two small tears in tendons in her right shoulder. The Olympic tennis tournament begins August 11, and the U.S. Open starts August 25.

Sharapova won the 2006 U.S. Open, one of her three Grand Slam singles titles.
