Don Imus once again brings race to airwaves

Don Imus has once again injected race into his radio show. During an on-air conversation yesterday about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"

Told by sports announcer Warner Wolf that Jones is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton issued a statement calling the exchange disturbing "because it plays into stereotypes." He says his National Action Network was still deciding how to respond.

Giants waive backup QB Jared Lorenzen, 4 others

Backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen was waived by the Giants yesterday, a little more than a month before the Super Bowl champions open training camp. The Giants also waived receiver Todd Lowber, long snapper Nick Leeson, defensive tackle Brian Soi and offensive lineman Jacobs Hobbs — all first-year players. Lorenzen's status had been a question mark since the Giants signed veteran David Carr as a free agent and drafted Andre Woodson, who, like Lorenzen, played at Kentucky.

Lightning set to name new coach, possibly Melrose

The primary investors in a group buying the Lightning say they have no intentions of moving the team, will be "shockingly aggressive" in free agency this summer and are on the verge of naming a coach. Oren Koules and Len Barrie said yesterday that the team finished last in the NHL last season is not broken, but merely needs tweaking. They hope the new coach, long rumored to be television analyst and former Kings coach Barry Melrose, is part of the fix.
