Giants sign Chris Snee to $43.5 million extension

The Giants guaranteed that their offensive line will stay together for the foreseeable future, signing guard Chris Snee on Wednesday to a six-year, $43.5 million contract extension.

Snee, 26, will earn nearly $24 million in the first three years of the deal, agent Tony Agnone said.

The extension will keep the right guard under contract with the Super Bowl champions through 2014.

Since beating the New England Patriots for the NFL title in February, the Giants have locked up three starters on the offensive line. Left tackle David Diehl got a two-year extension last month that will keep him under contract through 2013 and pay him $31 million. Left guard Rich Seubert also got a new contract through 2013.

Right tackle Kareem McKenzie and center Shaun O'Hara are under contract through 2012.

Ortiz says he is weeks away from return

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz says he is still weeks away from playing after testing his wrist by taking 25 soft swings off a batting tee.

Ortiz has been on the 15-day disabled list with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, an injury he sustained May 31 in Baltimore.

The designated hitter said Tuesday's batting tee session at Fenway Park was positive and "not a setback." Ortiz said he could not even hold a bat when he first got hurt, and is now at least able to swing slowly.

But Ortiz said he was still weeks away from taking full swings with a bat. He anticipates going on a rehab stint before rejoining the Red Sox.

Agent: Bonds won't play for independent league team

Barry Bonds has no desire to play for an independent minor league team in an effort to spur interest among major league clubs.

The indicted career home run leader remains unsigned, even though he batted .276 last season with 28 homers, 66 RBIs, and a major league-leading 132 walks.

Just last week, outfielder Jay Gibbons agreed Monday to a contract with the minor league Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. Gibbons failed to receive a major league offer after Baltimore released him near the end of spring training.

Mets claim Andy Phillips off waivers from Reds

The Mets claimed infielder Andy Phillips off waivers from Cincinnati yesterday, four days after the Reds designated him for assignment.

Phillips will join the team Friday for a two-stadium doubleheader against the Yankees. Phillips was drafted by the Yankees in 1999 and spent parts of the 2004-07 seasons in New York.

He signed a minor league contract with the Reds in January after refusing to accept a similar deal with the Yankees in December and opting for free agency.
