A Well-Timed Spa Vacation Just Before Boarding

By JENNIFER LEUZZI | October 30, 2006

Travel and fashion magazines have long dictated in-flight regimens of lotions and potions to keep travelers hydrated, feeling fresh, and to make the trip more comfortable. Sage advice yes, but no longer possible under the current (and ever changing) travel regulations.

The new quick service spas at the airport — tucked between Starbucks and the Hudson News kiosk — present an alternative, but how relaxing is it to have a chair massage on the concourse?

A recent offering from the award-winning spa at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami, the "luxurious layover" is an oasis for weary passengers. The inspiration came from the hotel's spa director, Sharon Holtz, a frequent flier who is often booked on long flights.

"When I have layovers on a long haul, having a massage can really make a difference in combating jet lag," she said.

"Miami is such a hub, we're really a place where a lot of people are coming though," Ms. Holtz explained. Those traveling to Central and South America and the Caribbean often find themselves stranded for a few hours between flights. With the Mandarin a mere eight miles from the airport, rehydration and rejuvenation are just a short drive away.

The spa packages are designed with specific time frames in mind: The three-hour Redeye Refresher ($535) features a specialized facial, the four-hour Jet Lag Reviver ($625) includes an 80 minute massage and facial, and the five-hour Ultimate Upgrade ($720) allows you to customize your experience with either "nurturing" or "detoxifying" programs.

All packages include a private car to shuttle you round-trip from the airport, luggage storage at the hotel, and full use of the spa's sauna, steam, and relaxation area. You'll leave with a spa meal (breakfast or lunch) and travel kit — both packed to clear security.

Prices are per person, inclusive of tax and gratuity, and require 24-hour advanced booking. Available for American travelers only. International travelers must check visa requirements. For reservations, call 305.913.8332 or go to mandarinoriental.com.
