The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts received a $1 million grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the library announced yesterday. The two-year grant will support approximately 25 documentation projects of jazz, theater, and contemporary dance performances.
The funding will also be put toward the preservation of audio cassettes containing 70 hours of oral histories about choreographer Martha Graham.
The recordings, which include interviews of Graham, as well as more than 40 other sources, were conducted between 1968 and 1995 for a biography by Don McDonagh. The tapes are currently in fragile condition and will be transferred to a digital format so the public may access them.
