LOS ANGELES — The editor of the Los Angeles Times, Russ Stanton, reconfigured the newspaper’s masthead positions yesterday, elevating the business editor, Davan Maharaj, to managing editor and naming the managing editor, John Arthur, to the new title of executive editor.
Mr. Maharaj, Times business editor since February 2007, assumes oversight of the Foreign, National, Metro, Sports, and Business departments. He will be responsible for shaping coverage, deploying people, and overseeing personnel decisions with guidance from Messrs. Stanton and Arthur. The editors of those news sections will report to Mr. Maharaj.
As executive editor, Mr. Arthur will continue in his role determining which stories run on Page 1. He also will be in charge of production functions, including the copy-editing desk, the design desk, and the photography department, whose editors and department heads will report to him.
