SO WATERY The works of Barbara Ernst Prey, featured in the exhibit “Works on Water,” include controlled scenes in watercolors from her home in Maine. DEFIANT GESTURES The Chelsea Art Museum presents an evening with artist Jean Miotte, who signs copies of “The Spirit of Defiance,” a monograph for his ongoing exhibit of the same name. A screening of Raoul Ruiz’s documentary “Miotte vu par Ruiz” (2001), about the working process of the abstract painter, is also featured. A cocktail reception follows. THE ARTIST’S STUDIO La Maison Française of New York University presents the opening of “Left Bank New York: Artists Off Washington Square North, 1900–1950,” an exhibit of the spaces and institutions used by the artistic community of nearly 200 who lived and worked in this bohemian enclave. Featured artists include Edward Hopper, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Isamu Noguchi, and Chester French. Virginia Budny is a curator of the show.
