American military officials and Japanese police confirmed an explosion late yesterday near the Camp Zama American military base outside Tokyo, adding no one was hurt and that there was no damage from the blast.
“To my knowledge, there are no reports of any injuries,” Air Force Major David Smith, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a telephone interview in Washington.
Activists opposed to a military capability in Japan have previously attacked American and Japanese Self-Defense Force bases. A similar incident was reported near Camp Zama in 2002, when police found a metal projectile after two blasts were heard in the area.
