The Conran Shop usually issues a traditional catalog twice a year, presenting each item individually, photographed against a white background. This year, however, the company has taken its catalog in a new direction, using it to express a design philosophy as well as an assortment of furniture for sale. The catalog, titled “Juxtapose With You,” presents a tableaux of items culled from the 200 pieces of furniture in Conran’s fall collection, placed together in surprising and unusual arrangements – contemporary ethnic looks, reissued classics, and sleek, modern English designs are all shown together, demonstrating the ways in which an eclectic grouping of styles and materials can be more successful and interesting than a unified look. One spread displays a comfortable but contemporary living room in which a Karuselli chair of white leather and fiberglass ($5,990) forms a peaceful sitting area with a Ming chair of black-gloss lacquer ($1,250) and a Rubino coffee table of red bent glass ($1,450).
