Foreign tourists are flocking to New York City in greater numbers than anywhere else in the country, according to new rankings released by financial firm Global Insight.
In the company’s rankings for 2007, which were released yesterday New York was ranked the most-visited city in the country by international tourists. The city moved up two spots to secure the top slot, beating out Orlando, which was ranked first in 2006, and Las Vegas. A record 46 million visitors came to the city in 2007, including an estimated 7.6 million international visitors, according to NYC & Company, the city’s official marketing organization. These visitors pumped an estimated $28.85 billion into the city’s economy, a 16% increase over their spending in 2006.
NYC & Company attributed the rise in foreign tourists to a weak dollar and the city’s record low crime rates as well as an extensive advertising and marketing campaign to attract visitors from abroad, such as the recent “Ask the Locals” ads, which feature New York celebrities.
