True to its name, the no. 1 is the best subway line in the city, while the W and C lines are the worst, according to a report released yesterday by a subway watchdog group.
“The no. 1 is 1,” a spokesman for the Straphangers Campaign, Gene Russianoff, said. “W is for the Worst.”
The 10th State of the Subways report compiles data from New York City Transit and grades trains on cleanliness, seat availability, scheduled and actual train arrivals, mechanical failures, and announcement quality.
The no. 1 train scored high in frequency of arrivals, cleanliness, and announcements. The C and W trains fared poorly in every category but cleanliness and regular arrival times, the report said.
“It’s clear from our findings that some riders are getting more for their MetroCard swipe than others,” Mr. Russianoff said. “We’d like the system to be more uniform and riders to receive relatively the same level of service.” Overall, cleanliness improved since last year, but breakdowns were more frequently. The nos. 6 and 7 lines were the most regular.
