‘Greenspan for Rushmore?’
While the American economy is certainly resilient, believing that it “can survive any system and anybody” places too much faith in the tendency for markets to triumph over politics [“Greenspan for Mt. Rushmore?” Editorial, February 1, 2006].
Why stop short of proposing a return to the gold standard as a solution to the erosion in the purchasing power of the dollar? Fiat currency systems have neither rudder nor anchor.
The historical evidence over many centuries suggests that governments tend to follow fiscal and monetary policies that foster higher prices. All the fiat currencies of the world have lost value over the years.
As long as central bankers can operate the printing press at will, the amount of money in the economy will remain a political decision, and low inflation will be the best outcome we can expect.

‘Bruno: “Get the Troops Out”‘
As a New York Republican, I am ashamed of State Senator Joseph Bruno [“Bruno: ‘Get the Troops Out of There,'” Jacob Gershman, Page 1, February 3, 2006].
His “go-along-to-get-along” approach is a vestige of the failure of the Republican Party in New York to stand for anything, and is a perfect example of the doctrine that a politician should surrender principle for small stakes.
His history of bending over for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was enough to discredit him as a leader. Perfidiously stabbing the president in the back and undermining the morale of our troops should be the last straw.
If the price of building a true Republican Party in New York is losing the current Republican majority, then let’s get to it. The first step … get rid of Joseph Bruno.

‘Bush’s Iran Plan’
Josh Gerstein ably explains the president’s actions and the reactions of his supporters and staff [“Bush’s Iran Plan Echoes Kerry, Baffles Friends,” Page 1, January 27, 2006].
I believe the article, and your readers, would have benefited from the inclusion of quotes from President Bush’s reaction to Senator Kerry’s plan during the campaign. This would give us a better handle on what appears to be a major change in foreign policy.

‘Coretta King and Justice’
I read the obituary of Coretta Scott King in The New York Sun [“Coretta King: ‘You Cannot Have Justice Without Peace,'” Stephen Miller, Page 1, February 1, 2006]. I want to applaud your staff for listing the breadth of King’s civil rights work through the years.
King had been a supporter of the civil rights of lesbian and gay citizens for many years. She was one of the very few African-American leaders to speak publicly to the need to stop the oppression of gay and lesbian people in our country. One such arena was speaking on behalf of gay marriage in 2004.
The inclusion of this by Coretta King was so important to demonstrate that “unless we are all free, none of us are free.”
