‘Spitzer Floats Plan To Woo Labor’
Jacob Gershman’s article on Governor Spitzer’s paid family leave bill fails to recognize the wide-ranging and growing support for paid family leave in New York State [New York, “Spitzer Floats Plan To Woo Labor,” May 18, 2007].
Over 100 organizations as diverse as the National Association of Women Business Owners-NYS, the American Cancer Society, the AARP and the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies have united under the New York State Paid Family Leave Coalition in support of paid family leave.
As the governor properly recognizes, the days of two parent, one-worker families are over and often the only potential caretaker for a new baby or a sick family member is someone who is employed outside the home. Paid family leave will allow those individuals to remain in the workforce and avoid financial ruin while they manage their family responsibilities.
Progressive business groups, such as the Women Builder’s Council support paid family leave and recognize the savings to employers that such a benefit would bring by reducing turnover.
Most importantly, according to a study conducted by the Community Service Society, the public overwhelmingly supports paid family leave.
We are encouraged by the leadership Mr. Spitzer is showing on this issue of real importance for all New Yorkers and welcome it.
