Global Mothering
A mothering crowd gathered Tuesday to help raise $1.2 million for the International Women’s Health Coalition. The organization funds projects that provide health care and legal protection to women and children in developing countries, but it works to inspire “an ethical and moral revolution which makes that kind of protection predictable for all,” the United Nations undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator between 2003 and 2006, Jan Egeland, said. The program honored Mr. Egeland; the dean of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, Dr. Allan Rosenfield, and the African scholars at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who are being funded by the De Beers Group, the event’s corporate underwriter.
Star Turns On Stage & Off
With a hit play, “Doubt,” on the road, and an educational program reaching children as far away as Greece, the Manhattan Theatre Club kept its benefit very New York. Three hundred guests gathered at the Rainbow Room on Monday to admire the views, praise the event’s co-chairwomen, Bethany Millard and Fiona Kirk, and enjoy performances by Broadway stars Christine Baranski, Jesse Martin, and Kate Reinders. Getting to spend time with the talent at late-night cocktails was a great touch. The event raised $600,000.
