The 1,300 attendees at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Family Party on Monday tried on armor, played musical instruments, walked a runway in costume, sketched, danced, and made ice cream sundaes.
“I’m drawing a vase from my imagination. I don’t really know if it’s Greek or Roman or anything,” Beth Kaufman said.
Gigi Glover found the helmet she tried on “a little heavy on your shoulders,” while Hope Petralia learned that “not every mask covers your face — some cover your head.”
“The idea is to get the kids to look at the collections in ways they haven’t before,” the museum’s coordinator of publications and programs for young people, Evan Levy, said. “We’re using the Met for inspiration. But we also find that being in the Met is great inspiration for the kids,”
The Family Party is so fun, teenagers who’ve been coming since they were little don’t want to miss it. Proceeds support similar hands-on activities the museum offers yearround — though parents will need to supply their own ice cream sundaes.
