Marble & Other Muses
Did Courtney Ross, who runs a charter school downtown, have a favorite object to name after touring the new Hellenistic, Etruscan, and Roman galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night? “There are too many beauties to pick,” Ms. Ross said.
Renée Belfer gladly chose one in the Leon Levy and Shelby White Court: a marble statue of a seated muse.
“This is so fabulous. It’s been 11 years since we opened our court,” Ms. Belfer said, referring to the Robert and Renée Belfer Court, part of the first phase of the renovation of the Greek and Roman galleries.
Trustees of the museum were thick among the crowd that roamed during cocktails, and then settled in for dinner. This was the first of several events scheduled throughout the week to toast the completion of the renovation. The galleries open to the public on Friday.
