Phelps Sets World Record — Again

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Michael Phelps broke his third world record in as many days at the world swimming championships, winning the 200-meter individual medley Thursday night.

The American led all the way and touched in 1 minute, 54.98 seconds, bettering the mark of 1:55.84 that he set in August at the Pan Pacific championships.

Mr. Phelps was under world-record pace throughout the entire race that features all four strokes. He became the first swimmer to win three world titles in the 200 IM. It was his record 14th world championship medal.

American Ryan Lochte earned the silver in 1:56.19. Laszlo Cseh of Hungary took the bronze in 1:56.92.

Mr/ Phelps collected his fourth gold medal of the meet and set his third world record. He also set marks in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. His other gold came in the 400 freestyle relay.

It was the eighth world record in five days of swimming.
