D.C. UNITED ELIMINATED IN MLS PLAYOFFS
Defending champions D.C. United were eliminated from the MLS playoffs 4-0 yesterday by the Chicago Fire, a game in which the post-game talk centered as much on 16-year-old Freddy Adu’s future as the poor effort shown by the team that has won four league titles.
Honduran midfielder Ivan Guerrero had two goals, and Jack Stewart and Jesse Marsch also scored for the Fire, who led 3-0 at halftime. Zack Thornton made four saves and extended his own MLS record with his 13th playoff shutout. The victory, which followed a scoreless draw in the first leg of the home-and-home series, puts the Fire in the Eastern Conference final next Sunday against New England.
Adu was suspended for the first leg of the series because he failed to apologize to the team for complaining about playing time and suggesting he might play elsewhere next season. He was on the bench again at the start of the game yesterday, but he played the entire second half.

Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, had nine aces in the final.
