Wondering what will be on the runways at New York Fashion Week next month? The Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show is always a good place to look for clues. Designers such as Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Catherine Malandrino, and Vivienne Tam – as well as the design teams Banana Republic and Anthropologie – have all been spotted browsing the racks for inspiration and great finds in previous seasons.
This year’s show, which brings together 80 vintage clothing dealers from around the country, has a special focus on rock ‘n’ roll style. An exhibit will chronicle important fashion moments in rock history, from Elvis Presley’s first exhibit on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 to Madonna’s 1984 appearance at the MTV Video Awards. A number of the vintage dealers will also be offering rock ‘n’ roll-inspired clothing dating from the 1950s to the 1980s: acid-etched leather jackets, platform shoes, band T-shirts, New Wave-inspired asymmetrical jackets, and hundreds of pairs of vintage jeans.
For the second time, the show will also feature antique fabrics, which proved popular last season with professional decorators, designers, and individual shoppers, who bought the vintage textiles to use in upholstery, pillows, quilts, and window treatments.
The Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St., Friday, January 28, 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday, January 29, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is $20. For more information, call 518-434-4312 or visit www.manhattanvintage.com .
