Police have charged a driver with hitting and killing a 7-year-old boy in Brooklyn and then speeding away, police said yesterday.
The driver, Jean Vargas, 20, of Queens, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly hit the victim, Christian Acteopan, on Sunday. Acteopan had been crossing Bleecker Street in Bushwick when a red Mitsubishi allegedly driven by Mr. Vargas hit him.
The boy, who apparently had been on his way home from the playground, was then hit by a second car, a Toyota RAV4, which stopped. The second driver wasn't charged. Acteopan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they later found the Mitsubishi in front of 1230 Gates Ave. Mr. Vargas was located nearby after police did a canvas of the neighborhood. He could not be reached for comment.
A friend of the family who answered the phone at Acteopan's home, who identified himself only as Jose, said that Acteopan, his older brother, and his mother had recently moved to New York City from the state of Puebla in Mexico.
He said they are alone in New York, but said friends and neighbors gathered at their home yesterday to comfort the family.
