City Council Eyes Gang Couture

Elected officials are attempting to crack down on clothing they say glorifies gang culture, proposing to investigate companies that market the products.
Council members Leroy Comrie and Peter Vallone are planning a joint hearing to address the issue.
Urban marketing practices made headlines in the summer when caps released by New Era depicted bandanas and symbols similar to those sported by the Bloods, Crips, and Latin Kings. After the New York Post reported on community protests over the caps, the company announced it was recalling them. A spokesman for Mr. Comrie, Rance Huff, said yesterday the company still markets similar products, and showed a picture of a hat featuring a black and red bandana, an inversion of the original’s colors, that he said was in stores now.
“They’re selling these shirts and caps with no concerns about the youth who could potentially be shot or killed if they walk in the wrong neighborhood” and are mistaken for a gang member, Mr. Huff said.
Mr. Comrie also plans to single out clothing line AKA Stash House as an example of gang chic. The garments feature guns, stacks of money, and slogans such as “Deal or Die” and “Respect the Shooter.”
