SHOOT ‘EM UP
R, 80 minutes
A mysterious loner known only as Smith (Clive Owen) delivers a baby during a gunfight, extricates himself from the fracas with a carrot (don’t ask), and then teams up with Donna Quintano (Monica Bellucci), a beautiful woman whose shady past he has played a role in. Protecting the baby from a team of hit men, Smith and DQ flee through an urban underworld while the writer/director, Michael Davis, tips his hat to John Woo and other masters of stylish but improbably choreographed thrillers. Paul Giamatti co-stars in the unlikely role of Hertz, a professional assassin with an impressive array of automatic weapons, which he wields with a glee that may come as a surprise to moviegoers who remember him best for his leading role in “Sideways.”
