Dancers from Korea dominated the pack of winners at the New York International Ballet Competition this year, as results were announced Sunday during a gala awards ceremony. Eun Ji Han won the gold medal in women’s dance, and Seung-Won Shin and Kwi Sub Park won the bronze medals in women’s and men’s dance, respectively. In all, six winners represented Korea, while Brazil and Venezuela each had one winner, and China had three winners.
No gold medal was awarded to a male dancer this year. “The judges felt that there wasn’t anyone that participated in the male category that had really danced well enough to be awarded the gold medal,” the director of the NYIBC, Ilona Copen, said. “It does not simply go to the person with the highest grade.”
An honorary gold medal was presented to the widow of Fernando Bujones, a late member of the NYIBC advisory board, in his honor. The next NYIBC will be held in June 2009.
