The Swiss installation artist Christoph Büchel and the Palestinian Arab multimedia artist Emily Jacir are among six finalists for the 2008 Hugo Boss Prize, a biannual award for significant achievement in contemporary art, the Guggenheim Foundation announced yesterday. The prize carries an award of $100,000 and the promise of an exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in spring 2009. The winner will be announced in the fall.

The diverse group of finalists, which also includes Swiss sculptor Roman Signer, the Danish installation artist Joachim Koester, and two Americans, performance artist Patty Chang and installation artist Sam Durant, was chosen by a panel of academics and curators that included two Guggenheim representatives. The panel praised the “spirit of exploration and ingenuity” of the shortlisted artists in their announcement.

Established in 1996, the Hugo Boss Prize has previously been awarded to artists including Matthew Barney, Douglas Gordon, Marjetica Potrc, Pierre Huyghe, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Tacita Dean.

The work of all six finalists will be featured in a book scheduled for publication this June.
