Matthew Polenzani Wins $50K Prize

Tenor Matthew Polenzani has received the third annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young American singers, the Metropolitan Opera will announce today. The award, which carries a $50,000 prize, is designated for singers between the ages of 25 and 40 who have already appeared in featured solo roles at the Met. Previous winners include baritone Nathan Gunn (2006) and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato (2007).
Mr. Polenzani will appear in the role of Belmonte in Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio” at the Met beginning Saturday, and he has previously appeared at the Met as Roméo in “Roméo et Juliette” and Alfredo in “La Traviata.”
