Heatherette put on an outrageous and high energy show, drawing an audience of models, actors, singers, and transvestites. Designers Richie Rich and Trevor Raines are known for their flamboyant styles, and their clothes are not for the faint of heart.
The theme was “Gothamism” – “I love New York” attitude – and it was expressed in sequins, spandex, and sweaters. Some pieces had Manhattan skyscraper mosaics. A man’s white tuxedo jacket was paired with white pants with a sequined building shape on one leg. A red-and-white corset was decorated with outlines of apples.
Dancers twirled down the runway and the designers roller-skated down the catwalk. A fluid, sequined halter dress earned loud applause, but the biggest hit was the surprise appearance of Naomi Campbell. Wearing a knee-length dress covered in purple feathers, she drew a standing ovation.
Nanette Lepore’s collection was full of Edwardianinspired garments in red, black, and metallic grays. Wool dresses led the daytime looks, while silk, satin, and velvet were used for night. A silk polka-dot gown with red cummerbund was demure, while a black knee-length satin trench coat screamed glamour. A red velvet double-breasted coat was matched with a red satin shirt and tweed skirt. These pieces were classy, bohemian, and completely wearable.
