Beneath the intersection of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn lies the world’s oldest subway tunnel. Built in 1844 and sealed in the 1860s, the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel was lost to history until an entrance was discovered in 1980. Photographer Nathan Kensinger recently shot the silent, dark caverns for his project on the changing Brooklyn waterfront. The Brooklyn Historic Railway Association runs tours through the tunnel.
