After leaving the presidency of Harvard University after a term of tumult, former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers is heading to Wall Street.

Mr. Summers, who helmed the Treasury from 1999 to 2001, is joining New York-based hedge fund D.E. Shaw Group, with some $25 billion under management, the fund said Thursday. The company calls itself a global investment and technology development firm.

Mr. Summers will work part-time as a managing director and contribute to “various strategic initiatives and highlevel portfolio management activities,” the firm said in a press release.Mr. Summers, who continues to serve as Harvard’s Charles W. Eliot University Professor, was until 2006 president of the university.
