Verizon Communications Inc., the second-biggest American phone company, will update the 911 emergency system for New York City’s police and fire departments in a contract valued at as much as $195 million. Verizon will install a new fiber-optic network that will connect the city’s emergency call services starting in 2008, the New York-based company said in a statement yesterday. The new system will be able to take on a higher volume of calls and help make 911 calls from mobile phones traceable.
