DOWNTOWN ART Thirteen artists unveil new work at a weekend open studio session downtown. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council sponsors the sessions, which give a glimpse into the work methods of emerging artists. On Sunday, visitors can enjoy artist-led tours of the financial district after the studio tours. EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED A new exhibit features 100 medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts. “The Splendor of the Word” includes Bibles, prayer books, atlases, psalters, scientific texts, and romances, all drawn from the New York Public Library’s collection of Western European manuscripts. Through February 12, 2006, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday, 1-5 p.m., New York Public Library, Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, 212-869-8089, free.


PAPER TIGERS Tabla Rasa’s exhibit, “Paper Cuts,” which closes this weekend, features artwork from eight artists who cut, tore, pasted, and glued together paper pieces. Erica Harris uses onionskin, birch bark, and eggshells along with vintage photographs and newspaper clippings, and John O’Reilly creates compositions with an old Polaroid camera.
