LIGHT AS PAINT Chris Becker’s “light paintings” – actually photographs – are on display. The artist begins with near-dark conditions, then projects light onto elements in the scene during the camera exposure. The results are eerie landscapes with haystacks, marsh grass, and trees glowing in the dark. He describes the process as “very much akin to painting or sculpture, using light and film as paint, clay, and canvas.” Through Saturday, February 25, Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Jim Kempner Fine Art, 501 W. 23rd St. at Tenth Avenue, 212-206-6872, free.
DUBOVSKY ON DISPLAY Painter Anthony Dubovsky’s paintings are on display at CUE Art Foundation. All but one of the works is being exhibited for the first time, including a suite of recent paintings inspired by the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu (c. 300 B.C.E.) and a group of 80 small-scale paintings on cardboard. Christopher Brown curated the exhibit. Through Saturday, January 28, Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., CUE Art Foundation, 511 W. 25th St., between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, 212-206-2583, free.
