WORDS OR MUSIC? The New York City Opera opens its 2005-06 season with a gala dinner and benefit performance of “Capriccio” by Richard Strauss. The opera follows the story of the young Countess Madeleine, who must choose between two rival artists: a poet and a composer. Stephen Lawless directs and Pamela Armstrong plays the lead role. The Peter Duchin Orchestra performs during dinner and dancing after the opera. Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. cocktails, 6:30 p.m. concert, Lincoln Center, New York State Theater, at Columbus Avenue and 63rd Street, 212-925-0054, $1,000-$5,000.
ROLE MODELS The Center for Advancement of Women celebrates its 10th anniversary with a black-tie gala reception and dinner. Kathleen Turner joins Faye Wattleton and host Joy Behar in recognizing Madeleine Albright, Sherry Lansing, and Gloria Steinem for their contribution to women’s rights.
