WORDS OR MUSIC? The New York City Opera opens its 2005-06 season with a gala dinner and benefit performance of “Capriccio” by Richard Strauss. The opera follows the story of the young Countess Madeleine, who must choose between two rival artists: a poet and a composer. Stephen Lawless directs and Pamela Armstrong plays the lead role. The Peter Duchin Orchestra performs during dinner and dancing after the opera. HEALING AT SEA A gala benefit for Mercy Ships, an international charity that operates a fleet of hospital ships for developing nations, raises funds for surgeries on board the Mercy Ships at work in West Africa. HELP FOR CANCER PATIENTS The nonprofit organization Cancer 101 presents a benefit luncheon, live auction, and afternoon of polo in Connecticut. Cancer 101, founded by breast-cancer survivor Monica Knoll, provides newly diagnosed patients with support and tools in the early days of diagnosis.
