POTTER PARTIES The publisher of the new “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Scholastic, presents a street fair celebrating the book’s much-anticipated release.The festival includes demonstrations with live owls, wand making, a Quidditch quaffle toss, magic, face painting, and the chance for children to have their picture taken and framed in the cover of the new book (Friday, 8-11 p.m., Scholastic Book Store, Mercer Street between Prince and Spring streets, 212-389-3800, free). Jim Dale, the voice of the audiobook – and one of the few people allowed to read the book early – serves as host at a party at Barnes & Noble (Friday, 8 p.m., Barnes & Noble Union Square, 33 E. 17th St. at Broadway, 212-253-0810, free). At another bookstore, the book’s illustrator, Mary GrandPre, presides over another “midnight madness” party (Friday, 11 p.m., Books of Wonder, 18 W. 18th St., between Fifth and Sixth avenues, 212-989-3270, free).
BRUCE AT THE BAT Prior to the evening’s Met-Braves game, baseball writer and commentator Bruce Markusen signs copies of his new book, “Tales From the Mets Dugout” (Sports Publishing), an account of the team’s checkered history.
