BEFORE THE BOMB A BBC documentary filmmaker, Stephen Walker, reads from and discusses his new book, “Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima” (Harper-Collins). The book traces the events of the weeks before August 6, 1945, when a B-29 Superfortress dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan.Tonight, 7:30 p.m., Barnes & Noble Upper West Side, 2289 Broadway at 82nd Street, 212-362-8835, free.


GONG GANG The creator of “The Gong Show,” Chuck Barris, celebrates the rerelease of his first novel, “You and Me, Babe” (Carroll & Graf), with a reading and discussion. First published in 1974, it’s about a romance between a blue-collar hustler and a New York City heiress. Mr. Barris is also the author of the autobiography “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (Miramax), in which he claimed to have worked as a CIA assassin throughout his television career. DEAD RIGHT The editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, Kate White, reads from her thriller “Over Her Dead Body” (Warner Books), about a reporter who takes a job at a trashy gossip magazine just days before its domineering editor is murdered. Pia Catton wrote in The New York Sun that the novel is “a sexy whodunit tailormade for media-industry wags.”The outdoor reading is part of the Word for Word series of summer afternoon readings.
