Tom Stoppard’s “The Coast of Utopia” and Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s “Spring Awakening” were named best play and best musical, respectively, by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle during the organization’s annual voting meeting yesterday. August Wilson’s “Radio Golf” was named the best American play. The award for “Radio Golf” is the organization’s first posthumous citation since it rewarded Jonathan Larson’s “Rent” with Best Musical in 1996. NYDCC also awarded a special citation to the current revival of “Journey’s End,” written by R. C. Sherriff and directed by David Grindley.
The NYDCC will formally present the awards next Monday. The award for best play carries a cash prize of $2,500. A cash award of $1,000 will go to the playwright who receives the award for best American or foreign play. The awards are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.
