WORKING CLASS The Brooklyn Public Library kicks off its “Documenting Brooklyn” independent film series with a screening of “Metropolitan Avenue.” Christine Noschese’s film focuses on working-class homemakers from several ethnic backgrounds and the financial tensions they face. Tonight, 7 p.m., Brooklyn Public Library, Central Library, Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, 718-230-2100, free.


FAKE NEWS The writers of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” present “NewsFakers Filmmakers,” a compilation of their short films. Highlights include “Deadline: Now,” a news parody developed for Fox; “Zombie American,” featuring “Daily Show” correspondent Ed Helms, and “Sanford van Johnson: A Life Near the Theater,” a PBS-style mockumentary. The series opens with a benefit and reception for 826NYC, a nonprofit organization that supports students’ writing skills. Benefit: tonight, 8 p.m., $40. JULY IN SEPTEMBER Miranda July’s film “Me and You and Everyone We Know” follows the struggles of a lonely performance artist and a shoe salesman. Tonight, 9 p.m., Symphony Space, Leonard Nimoy Thalia, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street, 212-864-1414, $10 general, $8 students and seniors, $6 members.


RED GAP MEMORIES The newly rediscovered television musical “Ruggles of Red Gap” (1957) is screened as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. After the screening, star Jane Powell discusses her memories of making the program. Thursday, 6-8 p.m., the Museum of Television & Radio, 25 W. 52nd St., 212-621-6600, tickets included with general museum admission. Suggested contribution: $10 general, $8 seniors and students, $5 children, members free.
