HORSE SENSE
A Williamsburg bar celebrates this weekend’s big race with a reading of Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 magazine article “The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved.”The bar provides barbecue, bourbon, and bluegrass music. Also not to be missed: a hat contest with prizes for the biggest and best chapeaux. Saturday, 4 p.m. party begins, 6 p.m. race post-time, hat judging to follow, 8 p.m. bluegrass music, 4:30-9 p.m. barbecue served, Pete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer St., between Frost and Richardson streets, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 718-302-3770, free.
