SPORTS
GIRLS ON WHEELS On Saturday, curious viewers have the perfect opportunity to witness a spectacle that’s currently creeping into the city’s mainstream consciousness: an all-female roller derby, featuring two teams from the Gotham Girls Roller Derby league, the Bronx Gridlock and the Manhattan Mayhem. Roller derby is a highly physical contact sport, played on an oval track, that involves two teams of five skaters: Each team features a jammer, a player who scores points by successfully passing opposing blockers. Players may engage in body-checking from the waist up to keep jammers from scoring. The sport, also played by men, is associated with a punk aesthetic, which makes the costumes (and their ability to intimidate) a crucial component of the sport. Get to this competition early to vie for prizes and participate in Gotham Girls Bingo. Saturday, 8:30 p.m., Hunter College Sportsplex, B3 Gym, West Building Basement, at Lexington Avenue and 68th Street, 888-830-2253, $23 at door, $19.75 in advance.
