NEW VOICES The author of the short-story collection “I Looked Alive” (Thunder’s Mouth), Gary Lutz, and the author of the novel “Belly” (Little, Brown), Lisa Selin Davis, read from their work as part of the Happy Ending series. Two members of the rock band Elysian Fields, Ed Pastorini and Oren Bloedow, provide music. PUBLISHING CRIME, SOLVED The bookstore Partners & Crime hosts a party to launch its new imprint, Felony & Mayhem Press, which is dedicating to reissuing out of print mystery fiction. The first authors to be published are Reginald Hill, Caroline Graham, and Lynn Hightower. Tomorrow, 7 p.m., 44 Greenwich Ave., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, 212-243-0440, free.
ENTERTAINER Darin Strauss reads from a work in progress. Mr. Strauss’s previous novels include “The Real McCoy,” about a con artist, and “Chang and Eng,” a tale of conjoined twins growing up in the Mekong Delta. WHITMAN SHOW The exhibit “Walt Whitman and the Promise of America 1855-2005” traces the influence of the work “Leaves of Grass” in celebration of the work’s 150th anniversary. Topics include racism, political corruption, and New York City’s identity as a city of the world. Several events are scheduled on the opening weekend of the exhibit, such as a poetry reading at the site of the Rome Printing Company in Brooklyn followed by a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (Saturday, July 2, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free) and a sail on the 1885 schooner Pioneer, which includes a recitation of Whitman’s classic poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” (Sunday, July 3, 4-6 p.m., 212-748-8786, $35 general, $30 students and seniors, $25 children ages 12 and under).
