STROBE SNAPS After artist James Nares suffered an aneurysm, he lost his ability to work for long periods at a time. Unable to go to his studio, he developed new ways of making art at home: Using a strobe light, he set his digital camera on long exposure, moving through the light to capture the dizzying movement of the human body. The results are on display through Saturday in “Chronophotographs,” along with Mr. Nares’s new paintings. Through Saturday, Paul Kasmin Gallery, 511 W. 27th St. at Tenth Avenue, 212-563-4474, free.

FAMILY PORTRAITS Nicholas Nixon’s black-and-white photographs are on display in “Life and Times.” It includes the entire “Brown Sisters” series to date. Mr. Nixon has gathered the four sisters together for a yearly portrait since 1975, grouping them in the same order for an 8-by-10-inch photograph. (The Museum of Modern Art is concurrently exhibiting the complete series.) The exhibit also features other portraits as well as cityscapes of Boston and New York from 1974 and 2005. Through Saturday, January 21, Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Yossi Milo Gallery, 525 W. 25th St., between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, 212-414-0370, free.

INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH Arthur Aubry’s photographs of barren industrial landscapes in the Pacific Northwest are on display at Gitterman Gallery. He captures the geometry in metal spirals of cast-off bedding, giant stacks of shipping pallets, and grimy machines of all kinds. It is Mr. Aubry’s first solo exhibit outside the Seattle area. Through Saturday, January 28, Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Gitterman Gallery, 170 E. 75th St., between Third and Lexington avenues, 212-734-0868, free.
