ROOF WRITERS Scribblers on the Roof, a series of readings by Jewish writers, welcomes Pearl Abraham and Lara Vapnyar. Ms. Abraham is the author of “The Seventh Beggar” (Riverhead), a novel about Chasidism and artificial intelligence, and Ms. Vapnyar’s first book is a shortstory collection, “There Are Jews in My House” (Pantheon), focusing on Russians and Russian-Americans. SHORT STUFF David Sedaris is host at an evening of readings of works by some of the biggest names in short stories: Lorrie Moore, Charles Baxter, Akhil Sharma, and Joyce Carol Oates are among the schedules participants. Sarah Vowell also will participate in the reading, which will celebrate the fund-raising success of the recent collection “Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules,” edited by Mr. Sedaris.
