A MATTER OF JUDGMENT A discussion examines the role of the judiciary in combating terrorism, including the constitutional issues raised by federal-court alternatives such as military commissions. Speakers include Bradford Berenson of Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP; Barbara Olshansky of the Center for Constitutional Rights; the dean of the Franklin Pierce Law Center, John Huston; U.S. Circuit Judge Barring ton Parker Jr., and David Rivkin of Baker & Hostetler. LAUGHING MATTERS Cabinet magazine presents an evening devoted to understanding laughter, and maybe even partaking in it. Philosopher Simon Critchley comments on a screening of “Samuel Beckett’s Film” (1965), which the magazine calls a “deeply unfunny short film” that stars Buster Keaton. Artist Luke Murphy will present his PowerPoint graphs that chart the relationship between laughter and other emotional states. GODDESS COMPLEX A curator at the Rubin Museum of Art, Jeff Watt,gives a lecture that explores female forms depicting Buddhist, Bon, and Hindu deities in the Himalayas and surrounding regions. The talk is in conjunction with a recently opened exhibit on the same subject.
