In a few weeks, we’ll all be watching the superstars clutch their Oscars while showing off their Versace and Oscar de la Renta out in Hollywood. But what do you do when your envelope is opened, announcing that you’ve been voted tops in your field?

Whether you are anointed “Employee of the Month” or “Top Sales Director,” there’s probably a special ceremony, banquet or company-wide presentation in your future, which may arouse more anxiety than the work that led to the award in the first place.

Soon you may find yourself at wits’ end, flipping through magazines at the dentist’s office to come up with an appropriate outfit.

If you are visiting the dentist, you’re already on the right track, because perfecting your winning smile is the first step in enhancing your ensemble.

Appropriateness will depend on the type, time, and location of the event, but taking it up a notch – or even a few – above your typical professional business look is the way to go. If it’s a daytime affair at the office, ladies should splurge on something fabulous or add a bit of oomph to an old favorite with new accessories and a different hairstyle. If you usually wear it down, sweep it up, or vice versa.

For the guys, spruce up a traditional suit with a silk dress shirt or a whimsical tie.

For the off-site ceremony in a posh location, live it up! Guys, tailoring is back, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Rich, tactile fabrics and warm colors are all the rage, along with narrow, tapered styles.

So make a date with your razor and dress to impress.

For women, this occasion presents the chance for a silky sequined number, the new-you Latin look of endless ruffles or the classic black dress. Whatever you choose, be comfortable in what you wear so you can enjoy your big moment.

Now, let’s get to this week’s questions sent in by Style for Success readers.

Dear Jordan:

I travel a lot on my job and so I prefer high-quality knits, but they are very expensive. Can I wear the same top and switch from pants to skirt in a two-day period?

– Corinne, Manhattan

Dear Corinne:

Absolutely, and I’ll take your two days and raise you one. Unless it’s an outrageous print that attracts a lot of attention, that top can work triple duty for you. Don’t be a slave to your clothes – make your wardrobe work for you, your lifestyle and your budget.

Dear Jordan:

I work out and like to show off my legs. How high can my heels go and how short can my hemlines go? Isn’t it possible to be a knockout and still be taken seriously?

– Stephanie, Manhattan

Dear Stephanie: If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Showing off your best features and maintaining a serious profile are not mutually exclusive, if done right. One-and-a-half inch heels and a short skirt are fine if you stay “buttoned down” on top. Pair them up with a traditional tailored suit jacket, and a scarf around the neck, for example. You’re sure to be admired, but not fired.

Dear Jordan:

Can denim shirts be worn with suits or are they strictly casual day only?

– Joe, Flushing, N.Y.

Dear Joe:

The metrosexuals of the world have changed men’s fashion forever, and that means anything goes (unless, perhaps, you work at a bank or a law firm). Today, you can wear open-neck shirts and even T-shirts with suits, so wear that denim with confidence.
