Hats off to Senator Clinton for winning passage by the Senate yesterday of an amendment barring further American funding of the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross until the Geneva-based international group admits Israel’s first-aid group, the Magen David Adom. The amendment was offered by Mrs. Clinton with the new senator from North Carolina, Elizabeth Dole, a Republican. It was an impressive display of bipartisanship for two women whose husbands ran a tough presidential campaign against each other in 1996. They were joined by Senator Fitzgerald, a Republican of Illinois. The refusal of the International Red Cross to admit Israel is but one example of the way in which the Jewish state is singled out for unfair treatment by international organizations that purport to occupy the moral high ground. Such treatment, which continues despite repeated protests and with no reasonable explanation, is hard to ascribe to anything other than old-fashioned hatred of Jews. There’s no reason for the American taxpayer to subsidize it. In taking this stand, Senators Clinton, Dole, and Fitzgerald are setting the right tone for the new Congress.
