The United Nations may decide as early as today whether to hand the chairmanship of its Human Rights Commission to Libya. If that sounds absurd, note that the prime minister of Belgium, one Guy Verhofstadt, has just given his okay to a bid to bring Prime Minister Sharon to trial for war crimes. It reminds us of Breendonck, which is the concentration camp where, during World War II, the German Nazis and their Belgian collaborators dealt with Jews. The warren of dundgeons and torture chambers is now a museum to Belgian fecklessness. The country just lacks the aptitude for standing against the fashion when the hatred of Jews is in season, as it is now in Europe. Some will defend the attack on Mr. Sharon as but a response to a complaint of the Palestinians. Envoys of Brussels will assert that this isn’t about Mr. Sharon at all, but about a desire to press war crimes cases involving many theaters. Yasser Arafat himself is said to be a possible target of a war crimes prosecution in Belgium. But the recent plan to expand Belgium’s claim to jurisdiction began only after Mr. Sharon’s antagonists appeared to be stymied in court. It is of a piece with the resurgent anti-Semitism in France, Britain, Germany, and the rest of Europe, and with the notion that Libya could chair a human rights commission at the United Nations.
