Kelly at Roll Call

Police Commissioner Kelly showed up at roll call yesterday afternoon at the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica, Queens, where the tone of the protests against the police following a fatal shooting has turned ugly. He said he was waiting to see if the usual critics of the department who denounced the police following the shooting would denounce the chants and signs calling “Death to pigs,” and “Off the pigs.” One such sign, visible yesterday at the site of the fatal police shooting, appears alongside this column. It has no place in this city.
Also pictured is the national chairman of the New Black Panther Party, Malik Zulu Shabazz, who showed up in Queens on Saturday to spew his brand of hate. The Anti-Defamation League calls the New Black Panther Party “the largest organized anti-Semitic black militant group in America.” The party’s 10-point platform calls for an end to Zionism and calls for the Jews to pay blacks reparations. It calls for blacks to be exempt from American taxes and military service, and for all blacks to be released from American prisons and jails.
Mr. Shabazz, a graduate of Howard University Law School, has a history of anti-Semitic statements dating back to 1994. The ADL helpfully provides some transcripts, such as this one from February 1994:
Shabazz: Who is it that caught and killed Nat Turner?
Audience: Jews!
Shabazz: Who is that controls the Federal Reserve?
Audience: Jews! (faintly)
Shabazz: What? You’re not scared, are you?
Audience: Jews! Jews!
Shabazz: Who is it that controls the media and Hollywood?
Audience: Jews! Jews!
Shabazz: Who is it that has our entertainers … and our athletes in a vise grip?
Audience: Jews!
In another transcript from September 1999, Mr. Shabazz is quoted as saying: “Whoever occupies City Hall — even after Giuliani — will oppose us every year, because they have to appeal to certain political forces, particularly the Zionists.”
At the National Press Club in Washington on October 31, 2001, he said: “Zionism is racism, Zionism is terrorism, Zionism is colonialism, Zionism is Imperialism, and support for Zionism is the root of why so many were killed on September 11. … We have to make it plain that Zionists control America, lock stock and barrel, the European Jews have America under control, lock, stock, and barrel, the media, foreign policy.”

At a protest in front of the B’nai B’rith building in Washington on April 20, 2002, Mr. Shabazz led chants of “death to Israel,” “the white man is the devil,” and “Jihad.” Mr. Shabazz also reportedly said, “Kill every goddamn Zionist in Israel! Goddamn little babies, goddamn old ladies! Blow up Zionist supermarkets!”
Police did not interfere with Saturday’s demonstration. But there are a lot of new questions raised here. Who invited Mr. Shabazz to New York City? Who endorsed the call to kill the police? And will those — such as the Rev. Al Sharpton and City Council Member Charles Barron — who were so quick to denounce the actions of the police who fired 50 shots be heard to denounce the hatred of Mr. Shabazz and the call to kill the police?
