Details were sketchy last night about the two New York City police officers killed in the line of duty on Staten Island. But it’s not too early to say that our sympathies and hearts go out to the families of the slain officers. The deaths remind us of the dangers that New York’s finest face every day while protecting law-abiding citizens from criminals. They deserve our respect and gratitude, not only when they are gunned down, but every day as they protect our streets. When the killer or killers of these officers are caught, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows — including the death penalty, if it applies. In the meantime, all of the city pauses to mourn.
